systems theory and complexity science are not one and the same, though sometimes they are erroneously referred to as such. organized complex systems are systems possessing very special properties ..they are not only integrated, but irreducible and adaptive as well. the elements in such a system are connected by a small-world network and exhibit self-organization. so, while complexity science can be informed by certain aspects of systems theory, the study of complex adaptive systems requires input from additional academic fields.
